The CNR-IMM Catania (University) Unit was formerly established in 2004, following a rigorous selection procedure by an international review panel, as MATIS, one of the ten interdisciplinary Research & Development Centers of the National Institute for the Physics of Matter (INFM). In 2010 MATIS gathered IMM as a Research Unit.
Mission of this Unit is to create a center of excellence for basic and applied research in many strategic fields such as micro- and nano-photonics, microelectronics, quantum coherent systems, advanced photovoltaics, sensing, functional materials and nanotechnologies applied to water purification. Our aim is to perform leading fundamental research in key areas for the technological development. We have collaborated over ten years at the highest scientific levels performing research with strong international impact, being a recognized center in the research areas of our competence. To this aim strict contacts with both industry and academia were strategic for the development and success of our activities. The location of our Unit within the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Catania has played a strategic role in the growth of this Unit.
